Flautist and composer Charles Davis is one of the most active and productive members of his craft. With his Ensemble Chancala, which is clearly influenced by the music of India, he has recorded nine selections on an impressive and enchanting CD that endeavours to embed these exotic eastern sounds into our western traditions. With "The Day the Swallows Came" Charles Davis and his ensemble continue their way along the path they began with their CD "Spirit of the House" (KlangRäume CD 30490), which connects modern jazz with Arabian and Indian rhythms and musical moods. On this latest CD, the strict formal language of the Indian ragas is regularly interrupted by excellent jazz improvisations. The instrumentation, consisting of transverse and bass flute, tables, tanpura (long-necked flute) and vocals provides again and again (?) for a timbre reminiscent of chamber music combined with an oriental depth.
A CD has been created with a "meditative, rhythmic and melodic character of an indescribable immediacy music the listener can completely immerse himself into". (Klaus Mümpfer- Jazzpodium)
